However, in a way, I did finish this book, by which I mean I skimmed about 80% of it, read the middle until it lost me, and then read the ending to see if I should go onto Part II. So I have zero memories connected to these genre classics and absolutely no appreciation for chosen farm boys with extravagant destinies to fulfill and/or empires to save. ![]() Didn’t grow up reading SFF or playing RPG and didn’t start reading Tolkien until the movies came out. I guess I’m just not cut out for retro high fantasy. ![]() Everything makes me want to take a shot of hard liquor at the moment, and this book didn’t do a good job of taking my mind off that. Well, it’s not entirely the book’s fault. can’t take the words in this book anymore. Location: in between board meetings and the governor’s daily statewide address ![]()

Demo by brian wood6/12/2023 ![]() “Overall, I do think that NY4 never got a fair shake,” Wood explained via email. But while neither series may have gotten the shake they deserved the first go-round, Portland publisher Dark Horse is looking to right those wrongs. New York Five enjoyed a five issue run and a trade paperback volume in 2011 from Vertigo, another DC imprint devoted to more independent fare. It was popular enough to warrant a sequel, even after Minx’s shuttering. The New York Four (2008) is centered on a quartet of young women who moved to the Big Apple to attend NYU. Perhaps most unjustly buried under Minx’s downfall was New York Four, a title from comcs writer Brian Wood and artist Ryan Kelly, longtime indie collaborators who also produced such acclaimed comics series as DMZ and Local, both done with other publishers. ![]() But in retrospect, the names on those Minx graphic novels read like a who’s who of comics creators, including such highly regarded artists as Derek Kirk Kim, Mariko Tamaki and Jim Rugg. Minx closed shop just over a year after launch. ![]() It was a bold and laudable creation, but a concept that was also a bit ahead of its time. ![]() In 2007, DC Comics launched Minx, an imprint targeted at a wholly underserved segment of the comics market: teenage girls. ![]()

Hicksville dylan horrocks6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Hicksville has been translated into Spanish (Astiberri Ediciones), Italian (Black Velvet), German (Reprodukt), French ( Casterman and L'Association) and Croatian ( Fibra).Ĭanadian writer Leonard Batts arrives in the tiny New Zealand town of Hicksville to research the early life of Dick Burger, whose work has taken the comic book industry by storm. In 2010 the graphic novel was republished by New Zealand publisher Victoria University Press. Hicksville was republished by Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly in 2001 and again in 2010. The collected edition, which featured much redrawn art, was released by Black Eye in 1998, shortly before the company went out of business. Much of Hicksville was serialized in Horrocks' ten-issue solo series Pickle, published by Black Eye from 1993 to 1996. The novel explores the machinations of the comic book industry, and contains a slightly fictionalized account of the history of mainstream American comics, with particular attention paid to the era of Image Comics. ![]() Hicksville is a graphic novel by Dylan Horrocks originally published by Black Eye Comics in 1998. ![]() What I do find something wrong with is attempting to derive, or presenting it to others as if they should attempt to derive, a positive, stable, forward-looking relationship from the position of a prostitute/client relationship. Given the amount of debauchery real people engage in, at times and in some countries, shamelessly in broad fucking daylight, I personally think there isn’t that much comparatively wrong with being a prostitute or engaging in prostitution if that’s what the pair in question seriously wants to do. ![]() I later came to unironically enjoy it, not merely as a guilty pleasure to mock myself for enjoying, but as an actual anime. And gosh…what a premise… Kanokari, morally, is utterly repugnant, and while that fact really upset me when I first started watching it, ![]() With that said, though, I’m also kinda glad I missed out, because writing for season two means I no longer have to waste time introducing the story and characters, since the audience is already familiar with the premise. I only watched season one after it ended, and only then did I realize how badly I missed out. ![]() Kanokari really pissed people off when it first came out, but given my exhaustion with oversensitive outrage culture, I completely failed to take the outcry seriously. ![]()

To love a thief julie anne long6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Everything worked and the pieces fell in place perfectly within Forge which helped make the plot twists believable. Blackburne has a much stronger grasp on establishing a detailed fantasy world than some veteran authors. There is complex political atmosphere in Forge, but Blackburne makes it easy to understand everything that is happening in Forge. Forge is not a perfect place, its corrupt and has its fair share of issues, which makes it perfect for Kyra’s story. It’s a richly nuanced world that provides the perfect backdrop for this story. ![]() The world that Kyra, Tristam and James occupy is as important as any character in the story. I loved the world that Livia Blackburne created. Livia Blackburne’s debut novel is a perfect addition to YA fantasy genre. After reading Poison Dance, I couldn’t wait to read Midnight Thief. ![]()

The magus 19656/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It was a theme he developed further in The Magus, in which he introduces the concept of the "Godgame" - an elaborate series of conceits that leave the hero uncertain of where reality ends and fantasy begins. The French Lieutenant's Women drew comparisons with Thomas Hardy and Henry James, due to its vivid pastiche of the Victorian realist novel and sense of place - Lyme Regis in Dorset, in which he spent much of his later life.Īs a writer, however, he is often cited as bridging the gap between modernist authors such as James Joyce and Virginia Woolf and contemporary writers like Salman Rushdie and Will Self.īy playing with the novel's constraints and restrictions, notably by providing alternate endings in The French Lieutenant's Woman, Fowles challenged the concept of the powerful, all-knowing creator and deliberately highlighted fiction's illusory nature. His genius lay as much in his masterly storytelling as his experiments with storytelling itself, most notably by incorporating the figure of the author as a capricious, unreliable commentator on characters and events. Fowles often drew on his own life, notably in Daniel Martin ![]()

Killer in Drag by Ed Wood6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Then, towards the end, a Cadillac full of ladies shows up. At one point, Ed walks outside and drinks whiskey. Repeat a dozen times until the red bed is overflowing with nude people. They roll around on a bed with red sheets. After a flip through the yellow pages, a model arrives. Photographer Ed is hanging out at his stately moaner. ![]() ![]() and his healthy supply of drunken witticisms: And that’s all thanks to resident dirty-old-man Edward D. ![]() And yet, unlike some of Ed’s other late-career prances through soft-and-hardcore misery (have you seen Fugitive Girls?), this film’s lingering aura is not one of hopeless despondency. Because there is no way Uncle Chet’s shoe horn would cause me to fast forward through an orgy. Now, to you and me, the folks who actually have to watch that happen, this scenario is as sexy as my great Uncle Chet’s shoe horn. And why not? Throughout the 60 squalid minutes of Pretty Models, Ed is surrounded by an aquarium of flesh that he gets to rummage, lick, and kiss. His big ass may be hanging out of a diaper. You know what’s great about Pretty Models All In A Row? Star Ed Wood. I’ve never been one of those guys who sits around the house in a sexy underwear-diaper. ![]() |
